Fundraising, The Open, Walkies and more what a month March was for VFC

Hey Team and welcome to March’s newsletter and the 3rd of 2022.

We wanted to kick off this month’s newsletter with a great big thank you to all of you who helped us raise a ridiculous amount of money for the British Red Cross working out in Ukraine. For all of you who ate cake, bought raffle tickets, splashed out on Stash and donated prizes, you are fabulous human beings. A massive shout out to the anonymous £3,00 donator, we know who you are, you know who you are and we thank you form the bottom of our heart for being the inspiration we needed to do something that matters – thank you.

Walkies was another highlight this month and with over 10 dogs joining us (plus their owners and more) it was a great stomp round the Chew Valley countryside. We were so lucky with the weather and it included a pub stop and Fish and Chips at the end – what more could you want from a Sunday in the UK? The next one will be going into diaries soon and we hope even more of you will be able to make it….furry friends or not!

We also wanted to take this opportunity to say a massive CONGRATULATIONS to all the of Healthy Habit crew who jumped on board our challenge back in January and have really made some long lasting healthy changes to move them towards their 2022 goals. Many of these goals where focused around body composition and we were blown away at the final check in meeting with the results these incredible individuals achieved in the 8 week period. Thank you to all of you, who took part and put your trust in us, worked hard and kept us accountable too. If this is something you might be interested for the summer or going forward please make your interest know to Ellie and Amy.

Oh yeah, a small think called The Open landed at Valesco and there is more from Coach Ellie on that below – massive thank you again to all involved, who made it the magical, amazing and damn right success that it was!

Talking of competition we have released our first 2 home competition of the year – Scale It Up Triple Threat and Scale it Up Four of a kind. These are both entry-level competitions made up of same sex teams of three or four hosted at your very own box. We would love to have as many home teams as possible taking part so check them both out on throwdownhub.com. If you can do a class you can do these competitions. They are a lot of fun and a great all round experience. Sunday 24th April and Sunday 3rd July, get it in your diaries and get signed up ASAP (spaces are limited).

Phew I think that’s its from us, so grab a shake and settle in for another bumper read.

Lots of love and positive spring vibes,

Amy, Ellie and Leila xx

The Athlete Development programme

Following on from the Open, we know there are some of you who have been surprised by what you can achieve and / or have the bug to compete! Looking forward to the end of the year we are super keen to go to ‘Strength In Depth’ in November with AT LEAST one team of 12, if not 2!  And that means we need you! So, if you think you would like to be involved, you can do some class workouts RX and you want to take your training to the next level look out for details of the Athlete Development programme coming out soon!

Gym comms and contact

We love you guys and we are always more than happy to answer any questions you have but please keep all things gym related coming through gyms social media and forms of contact.  You can message us on Instagram, Facebook or drop us an email (hi@valesco.fitness) and we will get back to you just as soon as we can.

You asked and we listened…

– As of April RowWOD will be increased to 10, from 8! We are doing what we can to create as much capacity, where it is wanted and needed.

– Open gym on Fridays 1500-1630 & 1630-1830 have been increased to 10 in each time slot.  We know Friday afternoon is a popular time in Open gym and quieter in classes so we have opened up more Open gym spaces.  Please check with a coach where you can train when you come in, as the space ‘class side’ of the rig will be coach and class programming dependent.  Please also observe the existing guidelines and check if you can stay on if & when you overrun your booked time slot.

– 0700 Class – we know this is a super busy class and there is sometimes a waitlist.  We are in discussions as to what we can do and we need your help! The survey has been issued and we will be collating and analysis the feedback next week.

THE OPEN RUNDOWN FROM COACH ELLIE

TORIE SOTO

THE OPEN. What a ride it was! 3 workouts over 3 weeks designed to test mental & physical fitness. It is always a great opportunity to challenge yourself, find out just how much you are capable of and have a little fun with the leader board (if that’s your thing).

We said, waaaaay back in February, that the Open is about bringing people together and supporting your tribe… and come together you sure did! We absolutely loved having so many of you down here to take part, rise to the challenge and cheer each other on!

A huge thanks to coaches James and Ella who took on the lion’s share of organising the Open this year! They did a fantastic job and helped make this year’s Open one to remember.

And, of course, a special thank you to Paul Van, who every single year produces the most incredible videos of Valesco athletes giving the workouts their all. The videos capture the atmosphere of the Open and the essence of Valesco perfectly and if you haven’t seen them yet head over to the Facebook page and check them out.

Last but not least, we always like to celebrate the person who we feel represents ‘the spirit of the Open’. And this year it was awarded to Torie! Going from unsure if she should even take part to being 110% up for the challenge, smashing every single workout, smiling the whole way through, celebrating the success of others more than her own and for just being a bl**dy good laugh!  Thank you, Torie, for being awesome and choosing to be one of the Valesco family!

What comes after the Open…the quarterfinals! This is where the top 10% across the world compete again to see who goes on to the semi finals and ultimately, The Games!

And we have a few boys and girls who qualified for the quarterfinals! Ella Rothwell, Jonny Crease, Kyle Bennett and Harry Joe Gallimore all qualified! Massive congratulations you ridiculously fit lot!

Kyle and Jonny will be doing the quarterfinal workouts this weekend so if you see them doing a judged workout be sure to cheer them on!

Until 2023….

PODCASTS

Valesco-CrossFit-02

In the words that we can only associate with the band One Direction, we have been on a bit of a hiatus with PODCAST with everything that has been happening at the gym but fear not, the latest instalment is being recorded as this newsletter is being issued and will be ready for you listening approval in the next week or so….but in the meantime there must be at least one that you are yet to listen too and if you are new to us (and maybe PODCASTS) I urge you to listen to the wonderful library we have built up.

Search for “Valesco Fitness Collective” on any and all of your usual music streaming sites / apps and give us a listen, they are a LOT of fun and contain some pretty useful information (disclaimer – maybe not the 101 PODCASTS, they are just a massive laugh not useful at all).

PUP CORNER

Sandy H&F

Hey Pup Fans,

It’s Finn and Harley here and we wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our Walkies with some of the members, and their furry friends, and getting out into some stunning open fields. So this month we wanted to write about how nature can benefit all of our mental health.

Spending time in green space or bring nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical well-being. For example doing things like growing food or flowers, exercising outdoors or being around us animals can have lots of positive effects.

We have listed some of our pawsonal favourites below;

  1. Improve mood
  2. Reduce feelings of stress or frustration
  3. Help you take time out and feel more relaxed
  4. Improve your physical health
  5. Help you be more active
  6. Help you meet and get to know people (and pips of course)
  7. Connect with your local community
  8. Reduce loneliness
  9. Help you feel more connected to nature
  10. Provide peer support

We love getting outside and going on great adventures with out homans! We are also ken on a spot of gardening…..not that Mum thought much when we tried to help her with your raspberries plants (and by help we mean dug them up last weekend!).

Anyway we hope, like us, you enjoy getting out in nature more now the weather is sunnier to really boost those summer vibes.

Loves you bye,

Finn and Harley xx

THE CALISTHENICS LEGEND IS BACK!

SAMI and Jake

April 9th 10:30-13:30!

Sami is a Valesco regular and has delivered many workshops teaching us everything from progressions for a handstand up to strict ring muscle ups! What this guy can’t teach about bodyweight movement, strength and control isn’t worth knowing!

WORKSHOP FOCUS: Handstands & Handstand push-ups, Toes 2 bar techniques and core training – including all scales & progressions for beginners.

Calisthenics is essentially strict gymnastics, starting with the very basics such as planks and learning how to get yourself upside down all the way through to the hardest of strict movements like the strict bar muscle up.

Whether you are brand new to us and / or functional fitness or you are a proficient at gymnastics, this workshop is suitable for you and will be so beneficial! Not to mention, loads of fun!

If improving you gymnastics is on your agenda this workshop needs to be in your diary.

It is just £30 for 3 hours and a great way to spend a Saturday morning!

It is bookable on WODify NOW and payments need to be made in cash on the day.

Any questions at all please don’t hesitate to ask

COACHES CORNER

Steve CC

This months Coaches Corner is written by Coach Steve and it’s all about Injuries.

First things first…injuries suck! Second thing, disclaimer, I am in no way a health professional

or physio! However, apparently my body is made of chocolate and has a habit of breaking so

I have pretty extensive experience in recovering from injuries ranging from tearing my ACL and meniscus three times (and in the words of the physician ‘in every way possible’…) to blisters on your hand, which are surprisingly annoying and limiting to what you can do in the gym.

Anyway, I thought I would share a few things that I have picked up along the way, which you may find useful.

  1. Injury prevention – Give yourself the best chance of avoiding injury in the first place. Whilst we go through a comprehensive warm up and stretching in class we all have our personal weaknesses and tight spots. There is huge benefit if you can arrive 10-15 mins early focusing on your own stretches before class.

  1. Onset of a niggle – We have all been there, mid-workout and you start to feel a little dull ache in your shoulder or a small pain in your knee that wasn’t there when you started. Make a judgement call but listen to your body. The chances are something isn’t quite right so probably best to take your foot off the gas a little bit but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a good workout. Don’t be afraid to ask the coach for a substitute movement and/or focus on other parts of the workout. For example, if the workout is running and pull ups and you start to get a pain in your knee when running, sub it for bike and perhaps use the opportunity to enhance your skill in pull-ups. Do you feel like you could push yourself a bit more on that element of the workout?

  1. Working through an injury – it doesn’t have to stop you from that one hour a day your normally dedicate to yourself and your health. There are always substitute movements that a coach can provide for you to make sure you still get full benefit from a class. Speak to a coach or message Valesco beforehand so you can go into your class knowing exactly what you will be doing. It’s all about having a plan! Also, lean on the coaches for their experiences for similar injuries others might have had and things you could do to help get yourself back to 100% ASAP.

  1. Post injury – depending on how long you have been out for or been limited in certain movements, do not try and pick up exactly where you left off from. You will likely have to go through a short period of acclimatising your body back into things otherwise you could end up re-injuring yourself. Don’t be annoyed if you cannot lift the same weight you could 2 months ago, you will build back up to it and quicker than you think. Remember to give yourself a break in the first instance.

To finish on a personal story, I recently came back from hip bursitis (basically inflammation on the hip), which meant that I could not squat for 9 months. I was determined to do what I had to do and switched my training from athlete to rehab and recovery. It was a long road but we will always get there and 4 months after I was able to squat again I decided to test my 1rm back squat. Low and behold it had increased by 10kg even though I had spent 9 of the last 12 months not squatting. But I did focus on my rehab exercises to help the root cause of the problem

So, in summary, listen to your body, have a recovery plan, follow it and be sensible. If you do one thing is for certain – you will come back stronger and a better athlete for it. It’s all about the long game.

Focus on what you can do not what you can’t.

Steve
