September at Valesco!
October 2026

VFC
Hey and welcome...

We’re heading into October, and at the end of a big 10-week block of hard work. It’s been brilliant to see so many of you putting the work in, developing new skills and pushing yourselves outside your comfort zones.
And now, with just two weeks to go, test week is coming! This is your chance to see what all that hard work has added up to.
Don’t get too caught up in the numbers, the progress you’ve made over the last 10 weeks is what really matters. Trust the process, give it your best and enjoy seeing what you’re capable of.
We’ve also got Flex & Fuel on the first Wednesday of every month, giving you the chance to chat and eat with some of your Valesco crew and fuelling your training properly, of course. Time to increase not only the size of your biceps but your social circle too. Check out the posters around the gym for more details and get involved!
And now for the big one…
THE VALESCO CHRISTMAS PARTY!
Save the date: Friday 4th December at Lane7.
We’ve got 150 places only, with tickets at just £25 per person, so this one is going to be a good’un. Expect good people, good times and a proper Valesco night out, because let’s be honest, we know how to have a good time outside the gym too!
Booking and payment are all through WODBoard to grab your ticket. Once those 150 places are gone, they’re gone! Remember you can book at any site if your home location is full. Email your gym inbox if you have any issues accessing all three sites; access is included in all of our memberships.
Please don't be the one without a ticket when your mates have already grabbed theirs.
Don’t forget, the Recovery Pod at Brislington is now back in action and available to book. As with all the latest announcements, make sure you’re checking your WODBoard app dashboard to keep up with everything happening across Valesco.
As always, remember: progress doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built rep by rep, session by session, week by week. You’ve put in 10 weeks of hard work. Now it’s time to see what you can do with it.
Keep showing up, keep challenging yourself and trust the process. You’re capable of more than you think.
See you in the gym!
Big Love Team Valesco xx

Training Focus
Highlight This Month: Test Week!
First things first-if you’re new, there’s nothing to be scared of!
Tests are simply an opportunity to see where you’re at right now. They help you set benchmarks, make future training more relevant (think percentages), and give you something to aim for if goal-setting is your thing.
If you’ve been working hard over the last block and have specific things you want to test, listen up!
This block, we’re doing things a little differently.
Based on your feedback, we’ve decided to split Test Week across two weeks. A few of you suggested it, we liked the idea, and now we’re testing the theory.
Here’s how the timeline looks:
We’re currently in Week 10
Week beginning 12/10 & 19/10 = Test weeks
Test Weeks = Weeks 11 & 12
Week 11 Tests
Tuesday: Pull Ups
Thursday: Strict Press
Week 12 Tests
Monday: Power Clean
Wednesday: Metcon
Thursday: Push Jerk
Friday: Lunge
A few things to remember:
You don’t have to test everything - choose what’s relevant to you
Scaling options will be available for all gymnastics tests
Treat tests as information, not judgement
Recover well, fuel properly, and ask your coaches questions
As always, any questions or feedback please give us a shout!
Class Focus: Weightlifting
Nothing but pure weightlifting, for those who love to lift!
Focusing purely on the Olympic lifts, our weightlifting classes help you to hone your skills and build confidence. The programming of each block and each block looks at one lift, allowing the time and focus necessary to work on technique, drills, positioning, form and mobility.
These classes are suitable for all levels and are open to members and experienced non-members.
When?
Brislington: Weds @ 6:45pm
St Philips: Weds @ 6:30pm, Thurs @ 6am & 7:30pm
St Werbs: Weds @ 6:30pm, Thurs @ 4:30pm

Coaches Corner

Coach Nic, You don’t have to put yourself in the bin to get fitter
I remember when I started functional fitness, I was incredibly unfit. I very quickly hit Zone 5 in workouts (Zone 5 is that very hard effort where you’re breathing heavily, talking is limited to a few words), and thought the quickest way to get fitter was to absolutely put myself in the bin every session. Redlining, struggling to breathe, feeling incredibly uncomfortable - if I wasn’t finishing completely exhausted, I felt like I hadn’t tried hard enough.
And I think a lot of us recognise that feeling. You’ve made the effort to get to the gym, you want to make the session count, and surely going harder means getting fitter quicker?
But how exhausted you are afterwards isn’t necessarily a measure of how much you’ve benefited.
Different intensities do different jobs
There are benefits to both steady, manageable efforts and those harder workouts where you’re breathing heavily and counting down the seconds.
Lower-intensity work, often called Zone 2, helps build your aerobic base. Think of this as building your engine, improving your ability to keep moving, maintain a consistent pace and recover between harder efforts. You’re working, but you could still hold a conversation.
Higher-intensity work, such as Zone 5 intervals, challenges the top end of that engine. It can improve your maximum capacity to use oxygen and your ability to work at a high output. These efforts are much harder, so you can only sustain them for shorter periods and need recovery between them.
Both help build fitness. They just do it in different ways, with different recovery demands.
More stress doesn’t always mean more progress
Training puts your body under stress, which gives it a reason to adapt. But you need enough recovery for that adaptation to happen.
If you’re redlining every workout, on top of work, poor sleep and everything else life throws at you, fatigue can start to stack up. You might find your usual weights feel heavier, your pace drops or you’re constantly knackered.
At that point, pushing harder each time isn’t necessarily helping you get fitter. It might just be adding more fatigue than you can recover from.
A steadier session still counts. You’re building fitness while leaving yourself better able to tackle the next hard session.
What does this mean in class?
Pay attention to the intended effort of the workout, and ask your coach if you’re unsure.
Some sessions are designed for short, hard efforts with rest. Others are about finding a pace you can maintain, keeping your rounds consistent and avoiding a huge drop-off halfway through.
For those steadier workouts, choosing a manageable weight and slowing your opening pace might actually help you get more useful work done overall.
You don’t have to finish every class on the floor to have trained well. Sometimes pushing hard is the right choice; sometimes keeping things controlled is exactly what you need.
The goal is to get fitter over time - and that means training at different intensities, recovering well and being able to keep coming back.
So next time you leave class having enjoyed the workout, with a bit left in the tank and excited to come back tomorrow - don't beat yourself up, that’s a good thing! You don’t have to feel completely wiped out for it to count.
