Everything Valesco for the month of March!
April 2026

VFC
Hey and welcome...
March was a huge month for everyone at Valesco Fitness Collective, packed with energy, community, and some incredible achievements. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen three exciting weeks of the CrossFit Open, with members pushing themselves, supporting one another, and creating an electric atmosphere in the gym. Outside of the workouts, our three bowling socials were a fantastic success: well attended, full of laughs, and a great chance to connect beyond the whiteboard. Mid-month, we also hosted our HYROX SIM on the 15th of March, where members stepped up to the challenge and delivered some seriously impressive performances.
March also brought a wave of competition season, and we want to give a huge congratulations to all of our members who stepped out onto the competition floor. Whether it was your first event or one of many, representing Valesco is something to be proud of, and we’re celebrating every single one of you.
Looking ahead, April is shaping up to be just as exciting with The Valesco Big Weekender! We kick things off with Friday Night Lights on Friday 24th, complete with a live DJ and I-Scream Tacos serving up the goods. On Saturday 25th, we’ve got Run Club alongside a heavily discounted SIVO session, and we’ll round out the weekend on Sunday 25th with a relaxed dog walk around Castle Combe—plus a drink on us for everyone who joins.
All bookings are now live on WODboard, and we’d really appreciate you getting booked in as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly and make the weekend as smooth and enjoyable as possible for everyone.
Wishing you all an incredible April, we can’t wait to see you in the gym and at the events!
Big Valesco Love,
Team Valesco xx

MEMBER SHOUT OUTS

Welcome to the monthly Member Shout out section where we like to celebrate some of the good things we see in the gym day in and day out.
Coach Amy
My shout out this month is Tess Aurmoogum from V3. Tess is super smiley to everyone, takes coaching cues really well and is a pleasure to have in classes.
Her handstands have come on so far already (and I know you will be confidently kicking up in no time) and always willing to give it a go with a smile. Tess gets involved with the socials outside of the gym and V3 are very lucky to have her as part of the community
Coach Maria
I’d like to shout out Andy Sheppard at V1. A joy to have in class, and always smiling even during the most brutal of workouts. Thanks for always bringing fab energy Andy
Coach Alex
I’d like to shout out Andrew Lucas at V2. He’s made huge progress in his clean and jerk technique at Thursdays weightlifting class. Proof that hard work and consistency pays off
Coach Ryan
Shoutout Dan Beresforde at V3, working hard on loads of drills before and after classes which has resulted in his first bar muscle up! Excellent work
Coach Louis
I’d like to shout out Victoria Whittal Williams at V1.
A regular on a Tuesday night gymnastics and a Wednesday morning Metcon, she always brings great energy and is always challenging herself to try new and difficult skills and i’ve witnesses amazing progression week on week in this block. Keep up the great work Victoria
Coach Drew
Bea Griffiths, because she’s a staunch supporter of my music taste. And she’s pretty strong too.
Coach Jo
Vicky Pyne has been consistently working on her Snatch this year, not just to lift more, but to unlock her mobility too.
Every week, a little more range. A little more lift.
She engages with feedback, adjusts, and comes back and tries again. and again. and again. Like all great athletes!
Keep going, V.
Coach Tash
My shout out is to Maggie Simmons at v3. She consistently works hard and puts in 100% every session. Her consistency is paying off and her handstand strength has come on massively
Coach James
Emily Preston for me this month. She’s a regular face at Weightlifting on a Thursday morning, and always brings a really warm and positive energy.
She’s super strong as a result of the care she clearly has for movement quality, takes guidance on board, always appears to have fun with her training, and is a pleasure to coach as a result.
Coach Rox
Tony Goldsmith for consistently PBing his front squat most weeks and always being so cheery
Coach Maddie
Big Congratulations to Kat and Lorenzo on their wedding day!

All things training..

This Month: We are half through the our current block which means we’ve had some changes.. Strict HSPU are moving into kipping and both Power Snatches and Split Jerks are on the build. 6 weeks left to go of this block team, let’s keep building!!
Class Highlight: ErgWod, This endorphin releasing sweat-fest of a class uses a combination of rowers, bikes and ski ergs. It is a favourite amongst our members and includes all the many other movements you would expect to find in a Functional Fitness class. High intensity and engine building is what this class is all about and boy does it deliver. Available on Weds at V1 & V2 at 7:30pm and V3 at 7:45pm, make sure to check it out!
New Here? Aim for 1–3 sessions per week, choose a target that feels realistic for you. Try to balance different muscle groups across your workouts and focus on good form before increasing weight.
Tip of the Month: Consistency beats intensity, aim for a number of sessions that is repeatable each week over the next month instead of 1 perfect week.

Coach Tash on Competing!
Competing in this sport can feel like a daunting prospect. Some people prefer not to compete. Their drive and motivation comes from other sources. However, some of us love a bit of friendly competition, or want to get involved but are not sure whether they should take that step. I wanted to share my experiences of functional fitness competitions; why I do it; the reality of competing and whether it's worth it. If you're contemplating entering a competition, then read on my friend; this one is for you.
Competing is challenging. It can be exposing, it can make you feel vulnerable and uncertain. There’s something about competitions that never really gets easier no matter how many times you step onto the floor. That being said, would I do it again? My answer is always 100% YES!!
My journey with competitive sport actually started long before I found Valesco. When I was younger, I was a gymnast competing at a high national level. That was my first real experience of competition, and it taught me a lot early on. Competing was a form of reward. If I worked hard, I would be good enough to compete. It drilled in a fundamental key belief that I grew up with; namely if you want to be good at something, it takes consistency and commitment, but these things WILL eventually pay off. Competing in gymnastics was where I first experienced that feeling of everything coming together on the day and there’s nothing quite like it! That feeling of pure joy, your emotions taking over. It's overwhelming but in the best way.
Through school and sixth form, I played netball at county level. That’s where my love for team competition really grew. I realised that while individual success was rewarding, sharing those moments with a team makes them even more special. Winning, losing and pushing through tough moments makes it feel bigger when you’re in it together.
Fast forward a few years where I found Valesco. When I was initially introduced to functional fitness, it was just about a way of keeping fit. I didn't realise that competing was an option in this sport, let alone what it involved. It wasn’t until I was told about an in-house competition that something clicked. There were always those members that I liked being in class with. Mainly because they pushed me to try and get close to their scores and would keep me accountable. But then I entered the gym competition with these members and I was getting that reward feeling again. I caught the bug pretty quickly after that and I wanted to know how I could start to compete on different levels. So I altered my training to focus on how I could meet standards for certain competitions and I've never looked back.
From there, competing has been one of the main reasons why I train. I’ve always had a competitive streak, and having something to aim for gives my training real purpose. My preference is to compete as part of a team, because for me, this is where most of my enjoyment comes from. The highs are higher when you share them. The nerves feel lighter when you’re not carrying them alone. And when things get tough, having your teammates beside you makes a difference you can’t quite put into words.
More recently, I’ve had the opportunity to compete at events like the Arnold Fitness Games, which was my second time on that stage. Every competition is different and there are always multiple feelings that emerge. In fact, despite all my previous experience, some feelings still show up, which, if we are being honest, we all relate to.
There’s always that voice in the lead-up. The one that tells you you’re not ready. That you’re not strong enough, not fit enough, not good enough. The anxiety builds, the “what ifs” creep in, and suddenly something you were excited about starts to feel overwhelming. That feeling doesn’t go away just because you’ve competed before either and for me, it shows up every time in some form or another. This can be really tough when things don't go your way.
I've had it where workouts haven't gone as expected on the day; where I felt like I could have pushed harder or I missed a lift I usually bank every time. Last year I injured my ankle at a comp badly enough that I had to pull out and so many thoughts and emotions flooded through me; ' I've let my team down; I've let myself down, all that training has been for nothing". But this is where being part of a team has always helped me. You’re not in it alone. Your teammates pick you up, keep you grounded, and remind you that one moment doesn’t define the whole experience. It makes those tougher moments more manageable and reinforces that it’s okay when things aren’t perfect. It was also pretty handy having a medical Consultant in the team to help in that moment... but in all seriousness, those experiences made me so much stronger than I was before. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. It has taught me so much about myself and how I cope with the difficulties I encounter and how to bounce back from them. We can all ride the positive train when things are always going well. The true test is how you manage when things go wrong.
But competitions are not just about anxiety and nervous energy. The other feelings that come to the fore can be pretty special. We all know the feeling when that workout is feeling "easy" and you're heading for a great score. Well, doing that on the competition floor and it paying off is a feeling of achievement that is hard to match. And when you share that with a team, it’s even better. The buzz, the energy, the pride... it sticks with you.
That’s why I always encourage people who are even slightly curious about competing to give it a go. You don’t have to jump straight into a big external competition. In-house comps are the perfect place to start. They’re supportive, familiar, and designed to be inclusive. You’ll be surrounded by people who want you to do well, and you might surprise yourself with what you’re capable of.
We’ve got our first "Friday Night Lights" coming up at V2 at the end of April, and if you’ve been on the fence, this is your sign to get involved. Another option for those members with a bit more experience and are curious about competing is to join team training. It’s a great way to get a feel for some workouts at a more advanced level, build confidence, and train alongside others who are in the same boat.
At the end of the day, competing isn’t about being the best in the room. It’s about challenging yourself, stepping outside your comfort zone, and seeing what you’re capable of when it counts; enjoying the process and if you decide to do it as a team, building strong bonds with like-minded people.

Burnout!
Life keeps lifeing and sometimes it can take its toll on you physically. You may not notice this until you train. Training should challenge you, not break you!! Burnout, constant fatigue, underperforming in sessions are not always things you "push through" They can be signs you need a better plan or to address some issues
Are you physically tired all the time?
Are you mentally drained?
Are you struggling to perform even in basic sessions?
This maybe something you need to address by a general health check up, bloods to identify any deficiencies and a review of sleep, work/life/training balance. Either way, do not ignore it. Stress has a huge impact on your physical as well as the emotional wellbeing.
Things to consider
What is your goal?
What is your current training load?
What is your lifestyle like outside of training?
What is your recovery strategy?
How well are you actually moving?
Sometimes stopping, re-grouping and just being a bit kinder to yourself is the reset you need. Still train, but maybe a bit lighter (less weight, less reps or replace a class for a sauna!!!) Movement is medicine and is important, plus the Valesco community is sometimes better therapy than anything else! We are here to support and offer advice and guidance. We also have James (advanced nurse practitioner) who is available to do general health screenings, bloods and other testing to make sure you are running at full capacity. If any of this strikes a cord, please reach out and see if we can help.

Recover & Rebuild

Mobility: The Missing Piece in Your Training?
Mobility isn’t just about stretching, it’s about how well your body moves through full range of movements with control. When you include mobility work regularly, you’re not only helping your body recover faster, but also improving the way you perform every lift and movement.
Better mobility means better movement patterns. You’ll move more efficiently whilst placing less stress on joints, reducing your risk of injury. It also helps target the right muscles, so you actually get more out of your workouts.
On the recovery side, mobility work increases blood flow, reduces stiffness, and helps your body reset after tough sessions. Even 5-10 minutes at the start or end of your session can make a noticeable difference.
Bottom line: Move better, recover well, train smarter not just harder.
Podcast Pick: Mobility = Long-Term Performance. This month we have been listening to the WHOOP Podcast episode with Dr. Kelly Starrett, breaking down why mobility is key for better movement, injury prevention, and long-term progress. You can listen here.
