Hey and welcome...
Hey Team,
Welcome to the first VFC newsletter of 2025 and what a great start it’s been for the year and we are beyond excited for the next 11 months.
This month we held the first social of the year with Friday Night Lights being held at Valesco Brislington. It was so great to have our first event of the year and so many attend and enjoy a throwdown with new Valesco friends and mixed site teams. Think everyone would agree that the live DJ and the food were both spot on and we are keen to hold a few more of these over the year.
January also saw the official start of our Assistant Managers and it’s awesome to welcome them to the management team so next time you see them make sure you congratulate them: Camila, Claudia, Dec and Raf. Having them onboard has already made a massive difference and we know they can’t wait to help make Valesco the best it’s ever been. Exciting times ahead for Team Valesco!
We have so much planned for 2025 and we can’t wait to share all the information with you. Think more socials: Bring a Friend days, Valesco’s 10th Birthday Bash, Scale It Up Comps and another 24 hour WOD (we must be mad), plus lots of stuff we probably haven’t even thought of yet but for now our next focus is the Valesco Open (very similar to the CrossFit open *wink emoji*) – Friday the 28th Feb, 7th and 14th of March – and we will be releasing more information about that in the coming week so keep the eyes peeled.
As we move through this block of programming we are busy planning the next block and there is more information about that below. Also make sure you check out Coaches Corner from the lovely Rox, one of our newer coaches and I can assure you it’s well worth a read.
So enjoy the newsletter, another month of gains and we can’t wait to see you in more classes being awesome every single day.
Big Valesco Love,
Amy Ellie and Leila xx
MEMBER SHOUT OUTS
VFC
Coach Hamish – Tomer Rimon, V2. As one of Werbs dedicated 7am’ers, Tomer ventured into my Tuesday evening gymnastics class to work on his kipping pull ups over the last couple months. During that period we worked on perfecting positions and improving tension throughout the movement. Safe to say Tomer’s pull ups have come on so much! Well done mate, you should be really proud of your progress.
Coach James – Emily Barrett, She’s a regular in my Tuesday gymnastics class and, not that I think she realises it, is a real infectious energy. She always finds a great balance of fun and hard work and has made really notable progress throughout the last couple of blocks. She asks great questions and really takes on board all the advice and guidance she’s given. Definitely worth recognising.
Coach Will – Mine is for Ness Burton, she’s a regular weightlifter and is really good at listening and implementing cues and feedback, her technique has come on loads and it’s a pleasure to have her in class!
Coach Raf – Kieran Gillespie, V3. He’s been learning and developing really fast. Dedicated and friendly guy, always following the coaching cues, trying new movements and always willing to push a little bit more every session.
Coach Amy – Please can I shout out V1 members Robert Howshall and Laura Bateman who got married on the 25th of this month. Rob and Laura are such a wonderful couple and always come in with smiles and energy on a Monday in the hour of 5am. Wishing them so much love and happiness in their marriage and hope they had a wonderful wedding day xx
Coach Claudia – Big shoutout to Laura and Craig at V3 in my Wednesday 8am class. They’re always there no matter how grim the workout looks and they’ve been blindly trusting me in guiding them becoming a better version of themselves! Weights have been unlocked and gymnastics movements are becoming less scary session by session. So proud of them!
Coach Drew – Rory Kilminster, V1. Rory works hard and strives to do all the movements with a healthy focus on technique. Proper form helps us get the most (physically) out of a training session and he sees that. Enthusiastically receptive to coaching and happy to try new things, like yoga. Keep it up!
Coach Maddie – Joe Stephen’s, V3, joined us before Christmas with a Hyrox race coming up later this year. Joe has been really consistent in his training and has made heaps of progress in the build up to his race, excited to see all your hard work pay off Joe!!
Ella Venn (V3) is always a legend to have in class! Works hard, always shows up ready to learn or develop a new skill and is so supportive of other members in class! Always great have you in Ella 🙌
Coach Dan – James Colburn, V1. James gets more than his fair share of “encouragement” from me and not only takes that like a champ but he is super consistent and that’s really starting to pay off with his pull-ups and TTB. This topped off with generally being a welcoming and supportive member in the classes is super cool. Good work and keep it up.
Coach Leila – Zaira, V1, for always being a Pleasure to coach. Always smiling and has made some great strength progressions since joining.

*A Dispatch from Lady Whistlerox’s Gym Gossip*
Dearest Swole Reader,
It has come to my attention, through the clatter of barbells and hurried burpees, that our fine gym-goers have emerged from the festive haze of yuletide indulgence with renewed vigor and determination. Ah, yes, how delightful it is to see the rowers glide with newfound purpose, and the kettlebells swing with an elegance only rivaled by a debutante at her first ball. There is something quite contagious about the effort expended in these early weeks of the year—an unspoken commitment to leave behind the indulgences of the season and power clean our way to greatness.
And what, you ask, could better fuel this newfound fire than the grandest of competitions—the CrossFit Open? This three-week event invites all, whether seasoned athlete or new recruit, to challenge their limits and celebrate their strength. Each week, a new workout is revealed, designed to test your body and resolve. But more than that, the Open is about the vibrant, supportive community that rallies behind each lift and each leap, creating a camaraderie as strong as any snatch grip.
The real joy of the Open lies not in victory alone, but in the shared triumphs and cheers as we box jump and muscle-up together, lifting one another toward new heights. So, I implore you, dear reader—if you seek to push your limits and be part of something extraordinary, sign up! The Open is not just a competition, but a celebration of community and strength.
Until next time, I remain your humble servant in all matters of fitness,
Lady Whistlerox
(Coach Rox, above doing the Open in 2021)

Pup Corner: Rest & Recovery, Harley & Finn Style 🐶🔥
Harley and Finn may be all about food and fun, but they also know the importance of rest and recovery—a lesson we could all take on board! While Finn is naturally more chilled, Harley fully embraces his title as the ‘agro potato’, always ready to stir up some mischief.
But before their daily adventures begin, solid recovery is key—a full 8-9 hours of sleep, a big breakfast, and a few extra naps are all part of their routine before they’re ready to conquer the parks of Keynsham. Sound familiar? If you’re training hard, don’t forget that quality sleep, good nutrition, and proper rest are just as important as the work you put in at the gym.
Harley’s ultimate obsession? A squeaky ball, which means you’ll spend your evening on hands and knees fishing it out from under the sofa. Meanwhile, Finn takes the relaxed approach, claiming laps as his personal heated throne—if you stop stroking her, expect a firm paw reminder to keep going!
After a long walk together (because, as we all know, exercise is better with a friend!), their recovery game is strong—passing out in front of the fire, movie on, fully embracing the well-earned chill time. So next time you’re feeling guilty about taking a rest day, stretching, or having a quiet night in, remember: even the most energetic pups know when to recharge. Train hard, rest well, and come back stronger! 💤🔥
